I’m committing to an experiment with the rest of
my life:
I’m taking Jesus at his word when he said, “Come to me all who are weary . . . and I will give you rest.” Whenever I am aware of fear or anxiety in me, I am trying not to act out of those feelings but rather use my awareness of them as a trigger to turn to God in alignment with Jesus. Whenever I do this, I experience inner peace, meaning and joy and genuine love for others. So far, the experiment is confirming Jesus’ promise.
I served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years. It was an honor and a privilege. Yet one of my saddest realizations as a pastor was how I and others - in and out of the Church - kept hitting what might best be understood as a soft-glass ceiling.
